Theory of Societal Demand in Adult Education and Learning

The society since time in memorial has been one changing chameleon characterized by new explosion of knowledge every now and then which calls for new tactics of survival. For people to successfully survive these societal changes they must keep abreast with the new pace that the society sets for them. The changing nature in social life therefore calls for workers to gain new and the latest knowledge, understandings and skill through out their lives. This is dictated by the ever evolving social needs to manufacture the utmost best products in order to ensure that its citizens receive the finest of all material items that will ensure maximum life and leisure quality. To achieve these social demands most adults who in employment are compelled to continually make investments in regard to their educational knowledge as well as in activities that will lead to self improvement (Tuijnman, 1992).

As a result of contemporary societal demands the initial to decades of the educational life of a person, that is K2 up to secondary education, can not be claimed to be an adequate preparation for that person’s lifetime working skills. Advances in base knowledge as well as in technology create a requirement for adults to essentially continue with their education. Life long learning therefore becomes an avenue for adults to successfully cope with the rapid increments to gain the required knowledge and skills (Brookfield, 1992).
