“Bodega Dreams” and “The Great Gatsby”: A comparison

Throughout the two novels, “Bodega Dreams” by Ernesto Quinonez and “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the readers are bound to notice the connection between them. In fact, one might think that Quinonez intentionally wanted to parallel Fitzgerald’s work even though the ending strikes a balance between new and old. More similarities can be analyzed from the two literary works though differences also exist. This paper will compare and contrast the two novels to unearth the differences and similarities between them.

“Bodega Dreams” blatantly borrows most of its themes from Gatsby’s episodes and events. From the hero Willie Bodega, the mention of his green light aspiration, the tale of an individual who has familial bonds that are used to connect the hero with the love of his heart to the end of the story. All these instances exude similarities with Fitzgerald’s work in a way that would make one think it is plagiarism. In fact, one might wonder what Quinonez aimed at accomplishing. This action actually falls under the category of imitation. However, the implications of imitation may be traced back in history whereby its explanation is determined heavily by the social standing of the writer.
