Trustworthiness and Ethical Stewardship

The problem to be investigated is to address the relationship between “leadership behavior, perceptions about [a] leader’s trustworthiness, and the ethical duties” (Caldwell, Hayes & Long, 2012, p.497) associated with interdependent leadership style. As mentioned in the article, the authors believe that there is a strong relationship between leadership, trustworthiness and ethical stewardship. It is essential to stabilize the relationship between these three elements in order to stabilize the relationship between the organization itself and its stakeholders. An ethical stewardship must exist in the organization and must be provided by the leaders in order for the followers to trust the leaders’ behaviors which will lead to increase the followers’ commitment to the strategic goals of the organization thus to the overall success and sustainability of the organization. On one hand, good trusted leaders need to develop and enforce the ethical behaviors into the organization’s culture not only by applying certain principles to outlines the ethical side of the organization but also by following these ethical principles and making sure to demonstrate these principles through their actions and behaviors. On the other hand, the worst leaders are those who are usually characterized by being unfaithful in keeping up with their word, being mediocre when doing their jobs andappearing not to care about those working with them. This type of leadership doesn’t usually lead to the overall growth of the organization; it rather leads to creating an organizational environment with disloyal employees and mistrusted leaders.
