Whole Tourism Systems Theory

Tourism industry is growing exponentially in recent years. This has seen tourist visits diverse places like the driest places on earth. Tourism has therefore grown to a level where tourists are travelling to frontiers visiting geographical sites that are psychological and emotional (Brotherton & Himmetoglu 2003.). Tourism has shifted from the earlier perspective of being a luxury and simple sightseeing to a more serious and a complex venture. This has seen even a common man attaining a tourist status. Therefore, these aspects have prompted development of whole tourism systems (WTS) which explains arrangements of people, places and organization (Leiper 1990). Whole tourism systems show the role played by each one of these development and their effects towards geographical extremities. Whole tourism systems consider five common elements that are interactive with environment. Through whole tourism systems, tourism has been diversified not only to include airlines, hotels and the widely known tourist industry, but rather become an integrated system of major components that are interlinked in an intimate and interdependent manner (Leiper 2004).
